Rachael Stewart Principal

Rachael Stewart was born in Durham, England. She started dancing at the age of 2 years. She trained locally in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap and Acro, achieving Distinction level in all major exams before the age of 7.

In 1994, Rachael was the youngest dancer invited into Royal Ballet’s Junior Associates, and remained a Junior Associate training with the Royal Ballet for a further 4 years.

Rachael toured Slovakia in 1995, and areas of France in 1996 performing.

During this time Rachael also continued training under the direction of Chiew See Stephen, studying the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, receiving Distinction in all RAD examinations. She trained and performed with the English Youth Ballet and the Yorkshire Youth Dance Theatre for 3 years, winning the Yorkshire Dance Scholarship Award in 2002. Rachael also studied under Wayne Sleep OBE.

At the age of 16, Rachael moved to Manchester,  to study Professional Dance at Northern Ballet School, graduating with a National Diploma of Professional Dance (Degree level). During this time she performed as a Principal and Soloist with the Manchester City Ballet in numerous productions  including some of the classics Swan Lake, Coppelia and the Nutcracker. She was invited as a guest artist to dance the role of Swanilda – Coppelia with the Hallé Orchestra and appeared as a dancer for the BBC Television series Stars in their eyes, and a documentary – Portrait of a dancer.

After graduating, she travelled world wide gaining valuable experience with many companies including NDT2, Rambert, National Dance Company of Wales (formerly Diversions ), Corella Ballet ( under artistic direction of Angel Corella) and others, before moving to Florence, Italy to perform as a Principal dancer with the ART of Movement Dance Company.
Rachael later joined the Florence Dance Company and the Amedeo Ballet Company where she performed as a Soloist and then Principal in many Classical Ballet, Neo- Classical, contemporary and Musical Jazz choreographies.

Some of her favourite roles to perform were Zobeide in the ballet Scheherazade, and Summer in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Rachael also coached as Ballet Mistress and worked as rehearsal director for many years.
During her time in Italy Rachael also began her teaching career, and taught many styles of Dance at the Florence Dance Centre, and the ENARS Ballet School. Her choreographies showcased at the prestigious Danza in Fiera festival in Italy and aired on Italian TV.

Having had a very successful dancing career, it has always been Rachael’s aspiration and dream to open her own school. Since returning to the UK, Rachael has continued to teach, coach ballet companies, lecture and judge,  choreograph many performances and even create first dances for bride and grooms for their wedding day. She fully understands the limited opportunities, particularly in the dance-field, in the North East and therefore wants to provide training and performing opportunities for local children and adults who perhaps in the future maybe considering dancing as a career, or want to enjoy dance just for fun and exercise.

She welcomes the opportunity to pass on her wealth of experience and the benefits of her vast knowledge.  Opening RESiDANCE Studios is turning that dream into a reality – giving her the opportunity to inspire new dancers, and pass on her passion to others.
